Shanties and maritime song
Shanties are perhaps the first truly global
song genre, sung on sailing ships to carry out
specific tasks, like hoisting the sails or
lifting the anchor. We’ll be singing lots of
those, but also «forebitters», i.e. songs sung
by sailors for entertainment. We’ll be singing
mainly in English, but also in Norwegian,
Swedish and - who knows? - perhaps German.
Our focus will be on rhythm, drive and simple
harmony. There will be lots of choruses, but
everyone will also have the chance to be the
«shantyman» if they want to! The only
qualification for the course is that you enjoy
singing - loudly!
I won’t be handing out sheet music - sailors
couldn’t read music! But I’ll make some
available, along with sound files, at the end
of the course.
